Professor Tadeusz Bujnicki


Tadeusz Bujnicki (b. 1933), historian of Polish literature, retired full professor of the Jagellonian University in Kraków. Worked mainly at the Jagellonian University (1955-1973 & 1986-2003), the University of Silesia (1973-1986), WSP (Higher School of Education, now Rzeszów University) in Rzeszów (1996-1999). Lectured at the department of Polish philology of the University of Vilnius (Vilniaus uniwersitetas) (1993-1995).

Member of the Committee of Literary Studies (2009-2011), Historical-Literary Section of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Kraków, member of the editorial team at the periodical “Ruch Literacki”[Literary Movement]. Honorary professor at the University of Opole. Chair of the Regional Committee for the Polish Language and Literature Olympics (first of the Kraków region, currently of the Małopolska province).

Research Interests: Historical prose of the 19th c., Henryk Sienkiewicz, literature and culture of the north-eastern borderlands [Lithuania, Vilnius, Latvia (former Polish Livonia)], Polish revolutionist literature (Broniewski).

Authored more than 250 scholarly publications, including 12 monographs and 2 high school textbooks: Pozytywizm. Podręcznik literatury dla klasy drugiej szkoły średniej (from 1989 to 2002 14 editions) as well as Starożytność, Średniowiecze, Odrodzenie. Podręcznik literatury dla kl. XI szkół średnich na Litwie, (1996, 2 editions).

Headed research projects: „Życie literackie Wilna i Wileńszczyzny w latach 1831-1941” [Literary Life in Vilnius and Vilnius Region in 1831-1941]; „Literatura Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego na pograniczu kultur”[Literature of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania at the Periphery of Cultures ; „Żagary. Monograficzny opis grupy literackiej oraz zgromadzenie i opracowanie źródeł”[Żagary. A Monography of a Literary Group, Collection and Interpretation of Sources]; „Życie literackie międzywojennego Wilna” [Literary Life of Vilnius between the Two World Wars].

At IBI AL: co-organized a cycle of scholarly sessions devoted to Sienkiewicz: Sienkiewicz jako składnik tożsamości narodowej. Z kim i przeciw komu? [Sienkiewicz as a Component of National Identity. With Whom and against Whom?](Warsaw – Kiejdany- Vilnius – Łuck -Zbaraż - Beresteczko (2003, 2004, published in 2007), Czyja Afryka? [Whose Africa?] (Warszawa 2009), Mały Sienkiewicz [„Little”Sienkiewicz] (Warszawa 2010). In preparation: Sienkiewicza drobiazgi i pomysły [Sienkiewicz’s Trifles & Schemes].

Prof. Bujnicki also co-organized international scholarly sessions: in Vilnius (Życie literackie w Wilnie i na Wileńszczyźnie w latach 1831-1941 [Literary life in Vilnius and Vilnius Region in 1831-1941], 1997); (Wilno literackie na styku kultur [Literary Vilnius at the Border of Cultures], 2002), in Lublin (Ostatni Obywatele Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego [The Last Citizens of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania], 2003) and in Kraków (Żagary. Środowisko kulturowe grupy literackiej [Żagary. Cultural Environment of a Literary Group] , 2008 ).
