1948-1952: Department of Law at the University of Warsaw. PhD in 1961 (dissertation: „Materfamilias in the Roman Law”. Habilitation in 1968 (monograph „Obligationes ex variis causarum figuris in Classical Roman Law”).
Complementary studies abroad: in Italy at the Istituto Universitario di studi Europei in Torino and at the Istituto di Diritto Romano in Rome.
Taught at universities abroad, mainly in Italy and France (Università di Camerino,  professore a contratto – acad. year 1982-83; Paris I - Panthéon-Sorbonne, Professeur invité – 1987; IV-e Séction École Pratique des Hautes Études - Sorbonne – acad. year 1991-92 as directeur d’études invité étranger; series of lectures at the Università di Napoli I Facoltà di Giurisprudenza in 1989, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003; Università di Sassari 2000, professore a contratto; Università di Roma II 2005.
Participated in many international scholarly meetings. Member of the Warsaw Scholarly Society; Head of the Committee for Ancient Laws; formerly (twice) Head of the Committee for Ancient Culture of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN); member of academic boards, e.g. of the IBI UW (Chairman of the Academic Board of OBTA until 2005); of the Institute of History of Law at the University of Warsaw; of the Institute of Legal Sciences at PAN; President of the Academic Board of the Research Centre of the Bar.
Member of international scholarly associations, e.g. Société d´Histoire du Droit; Société Française du XVIII-e siècle; consiglio scientifico Centro Internazionale di studi romanistici „Copanello”.

Member of the board of scholarly journals: „INDEX” International Survey of Roman Law; „IURA” Rivista internazionale di diritto romano e Antico; member of the editing team of „Palestra”, a periodical of the Polish Bar.

Research Areas: Classical Roman Law; the influence of the Roman law on the development of European legal culture; legal humanism, the Enlightenment (the Encyclopedic movement of the Age of Enlightenment; Legislation in the Age of Enlightenment, Napoleonic codification of law.
