Romances with Cicero. Cicero’s Afterlife and its Transformations in the Historical Fiction of 20th-21st Century

Loga Katarzyna Marciniak: the project Romances with Cicero. Cicero’s Afterlife and its Transformations in the Historical Fiction of 20th-21st Century, being carried out in the frame of the Mobility Plus Grant (MNiSW), at the invitation of prof. Ulrich Schmitzer from the Collaborative Research Centre 644: Transformations of Antiquity in Berlin. The project aims at an analysis of Cicero’s image in the novels written after 1945 until today – children’s books, historical novels, crime stories, mysteries, romances, and amateur creative writing published on the Internet. The methods borrowed from Reception Studies permit to treat Cicero as a barometer of the contemporary world’s transformations, considering the interaction between a given Cicero’s image and the cultural-political context characteristic for a given author and his audience. In consequence, the research into the issue will lead to a better comprehension of the recent phenomena occurring in a civilization rooted in the Greco-Roman tradition.
